With their venomous fangs and sinister reputation, the snake is a great guardian of alcohol.
Bats can get drunk off fermented fruit.
Octopi have the enzyme responsible for alcohol metabolism, meaning they can handle their liquor. They also have a lot of arms - perfect for carrying rounds of drinks back to the table.
The skeleton man is based on a mosaic from Pompeii. To Romans the image was a ‘memento mori’: a reminder that one day we will die, so we should eat, drink and be merry while we can.
